First Nation's Members Create Successful Transporation Plan During Wildfire
Overview:
First Nation's community members created a successful transportation set-up that allowed physician access for both First Nation's and non-First Nation's members during wildfire season.
We were in a situation in 2017 where our members couldn’t even leave the community because of the wildfires. All of our road access was cut off and the only way we could get out of the community was through backroads so we had to set up a really good system of transport in the event our members needed to get out. I credit the [First Nation's X Family] staff because part of that issue was refilling prescriptions for our community members and our ability to do that. So we had staff here that were able to take prescriptions to [Nearby Community X] to get them filled so we had a prescription day actually happening and word got out really quickly to non-members like our local neighbors in the [X Lake] and [Y Lake] area where we had non-First Nations come and access that prescription run as well and then we were able to get [Dr. X] in who retired from here - I believe he works in [Urban City X] but he came in to lend his support to the wildfire - and we had a doctor’s clinic. Again, we had not only our own members come in and access but we had other non-members come in from the local area to utilize that service. So even though isolation made it an issue because of the resourceful people and staff we had in here, we made a system work quite well for us where people were coming here to access services because everything else was shut down.
