Locals Look After 'The Yellow House' Mental Health Services

So we have chief and council and the numbers are probably somewhere between 200 and 400 in total for members of the [First Nations Band X] is the easier way to say it. They’re part of the [First Nations Band X] and they have a place called the Yellow House and it’s a house painted yellow – it used to be. And they have representatives who are not trained nurses or anything but they are community individuals who look after the Yellow House which is where mental health services go to them from the Creston Valley services program. And where they are now looking at other outreach programs…there’s some crossover into our services which has been a long time coming but is coming. And their connection to our hospital has come much better together over the last few years. They – this area’s known for a sturgeon-nosed canoe. It’s the only place outside of somewhere in Russia that makes that particular canoe and it’s very sacred to them. They built a canoe specifically for the hospital and walked it from the Band office, up through the community, up to the hospital, which is a distance of probably five kilometres, and they carried it and provided it to the hospital and it’s in a glass case there now. It’s about four feet long. It’s a replica but it is that real tie-in to the [First Nations Band X] to say, we welcome you. And they say we are a part of who you are. So that’s positive.
